Vanderbilt and coach Jerry Stackhouse have agreed to part ways, the school announced Thursday.

Stackhouse, 49, compiled a record of 70-92 (28-60 SEC) in five seasons at the school, with two appearances in the NIT (2022, 2023). The Commodores have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2017.

A report earlier in the day from CBS Sports said the former NBA star’s buyout figure with the school was believed to be more than $15 million, though the school’s statement did not mention a figure. Stackhouse signed a six-year contract when he was hired in 2019 and signed an extension in 2022.

Under Stackhouse, the Commodores finished over .500 in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, before this season’s struggles.

Vanderbilt finished 9-23, including 4-14 in the Southeastern Conference. The season ended Wednesday night with a 90-85 overtime loss to Arkansas in the first round of the SEC tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

Vice chancellor and athletic director Candice Storey Lee acknowledged the lift Stackhouse gave the program.

“Commodore Nation will always remember the ‘Memorial Magic’ moments we experienced under Coach Stackhouse’s leadership. Given his pedigree, experience and love of the game, I look forward to seeing what’s next for him,” she said in a published statement.

Stackhouse called his time at Vanderbilt a privilege. It was his first college head coaching job.

“I appreciate the opportunity that Vanderbilt gave me to broaden my experience with the sport that I love, and one that has blessed me in more ways than I can count,” Stackhouse said.

Stackhouse was an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies before taking the reins at Vanderbilt in 2019.

Stackhouse was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft out of North Carolina and became a two-time All-Star during 18 seasons with eight teams. He averaged 16.9 points, 3.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds across 970 games (564 starts).
