The Toronto Raptors announced Thursday that the younger brother of wing RJ Barrett died Tuesday.

The team did not disclose the age or cause of death of Nathan Barrett, whom the Raptors said was surrounded by family friends and his church when he died.

“While our family is devastated by this great loss, we will continue to cherish the memories and time spent together,” the team said in a statement on behalf of the Barrett family. “Nathan was a God-fearing young man of strong character. He was thoughtful, kind, loving, compassionate, creative, admirable, and driven.

“During this difficult time, our family would like to ask for privacy but greatly appreciates the outpouring of love, support and prayers that we have been receiving. Though his time with us was brief, he will live forever in our hearts.”

RJ Barrett was ruled out of Friday’s game against the Orlando Magic due to personal reasons.

Barrett was traded from the New York Knicks, along with Immanuel Quickley, to the Raptors for OG Anunoby, Malachi Flynn and Precious Achiuwa in late December.

Barrett, who was drafted third overall by the Knicks in 2019, is in his fifth season. He is averaging 19.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 53 games this season. In 27 games with the Raptors, the Toronto native is averaging 20.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and four assists.
