NHL: Jake Walman’s OT goal lifts Red Wings over Canucks

Jake Walman scored on a penalty shot 23 seconds into overtime to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 home win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.

Walman was awarded the penalty shot after being slashed on a breakaway by Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes.

Walman added an assist and Lucas Raymond, Daniel Sprong and Michael Rasmussen each scored for Detroit.

Filip Hronek and Elias Pettersson each had a goal and two assists for Vancouver.

Vancouver held a 3-1 lead after two periods, but Detroit tied the score with two goals in the third to force overtime.

Detroit cut its deficit to 3-2 with 17:26 remaining in the game on a power-play goal by Sprong, who took a pass from Patrick Kane and beat Vancouver goalie Casey DeSmith from the slot.

The Red Wings tied the score at 3-3 with 12:09 remaining on a goal by Rasmussen, who tipped in a point shot from Walman.

Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Vancouver scored three goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

Vancouver tied the score at 1-1 just 1:09 into the second period on a goal by Nils Hoglander, who from in between the face-off circles tipped a point shot from Hronek past Detroit goalie Alex Lyon.

With 8:50 remaining in the second, Hronek put the Canucks up 2-1 when he took a pass from Ilya Mikheyev, skated in on a breakaway and beat Lyon.

Vancouver took a 3-1 lead on a goal by Pettersson, who from in front of Lyon pounced on a loose puck that caromed off of the boards behind the net and tapped it into an empty net.

The Red Wings opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the game on a goal by Raymond. He made a move around Vancouver defenseman Tyler Myers in the left face-off circle, cut in across the crease, kept the puck away from DeSmith and fired the puck into an open goal to give Detroit a 1-0 lead.
