With the Toronto Maple Leafs and star forward William Nylander working on an extension, the talented Swede could become one of the NHL’s highest-paid players, The Athletic reported Thursday.

Per the report, the 27-year-old Nylander could receive an eight-year extension worth “north of 11 million per season.”

Nylander, who opened the season on a franchise-record, 17-game points streak, is on pace for career highs in goals and points as he’s totaled 19 goals and 51 points in 36 games.

Playing in every game last season, Nylander achieved career highs in goals (40), assists (47) and points (87), adding four goals and 10 points in 11 postseason games.

Nylander would be the 10th player scheduled to carry a cap hit of $11 million or more next season, joining teammates Auston Matthews ($13.25M) and John Tavares ($11M).

Leafs teammate Mitch Marner carries a cap hit just over $10.9 million, which would rank 10th next season.

The Florida Panthers are the only other team with two or more players in the top 15, with Sergei Bobrovsky and Aleksander Barkov both at $10 million.

In the final year of a six-year, $45 million deal he signed in 2018, Nylander’s cap hit this season is $6.96 million. The contract includes a 10-team, no-trade list this season.

Selected eighth overall by the Leafs in the 2014 draft, Nylander has 196 goals and 481 points in 557 games.
