The Portland Timbers acquired veteran defender Kamal Miller from Inter Miami on Thursday.

Miami receives at least $625,000 in general allocation money and a 2024 international roster slot in exchange for Miller.

The 26-year-old Canadian has recorded three goals and six assists in 110 MLS matches (102 starts) with three teams.

“We are excited to welcome Kamal Miller to the Portland Timbers,” general manager Ned Grabavoy said. “Strengthening our defensive group this offseason was a priority. Kamal provides us a great player, competitor, and flexibility along our backline. We look forward to him joining our group as our preseason work gets underway.”

Miami gets $500,000 in general allocation money for 2024 and $125,000 more in 2025. Portland could send up to $150,000 more if Miller reaches certain performance metrics. Inter Miami will also receive a percentage of any future transfers of Miller outside of MLS.

Miller is under contract with the Timbers through the 2026 season with a club option in 2027.

He broke into the league with Orlando City SC (2019-20) before stints with CF Montreal (2021-23) and Miami.

The move to Portland reunites him with first-year Timbers head coach Phil Neville, who previously coached Miller at Inter Miami and with Team Canada.

“Kamal was our No. 1 target when I first got to Portland. He brings great quality and experience being a regular for Canada, having played at a top level in the World Cup and being one of the top center backs in the league,” Neville said. “Kamal is a winner that provides us with character and personality and will help us get stronger in the backline. Can’t wait to get working with him again.”
