Boo Buie scored 31 points and dished nine assists, and Northwestern held on for a thrilling 92-88 overtime win against No. 1 Purdue in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams on Friday night in Evanston, Ill.
Northwestern fans stormed the court after the victory, which marked the second time in less than 10 months that the Wildcats (6-1, 1-0 Big Ten) pulled off a home upset over the Boilermakers. Northwestern also beat then-No. 1 Purdue on Feb. 12 in Evanston.
Zach Edey scored 35 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Purdue (7-1, 0-1). Fletcher Loyer added 17 points, and Braden Smith finished with 12 points and nine assists.
Northwestern improved to 2-19 all-time against No. 1-ranked teams, with both victories coming against Edey and the Boilermakers.
No. 5 Kansas 69, No. 4 Connecticut 65
Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 21 points and the Jayhawks led most of the way to beat the Huskies in the Big East-Big 12 Battle at Lawrence, Kan.
KJ Adams Jr. added 18 points and Hunter Dickinson registered 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots for Kansas (7-1).
Tristen Newton made a career-best six 3-pointers while scoring a season-high 31 points for Connecticut (7-1).
No. 6 Houston 66, Xavier 60
LJ Cryer scored a game-high 23 points while Jamal Shead added 13 to lead the Cougars past the Musketeers in a Big East-Big 12 Battle contest in Cincinnati.
J’Wan Roberts had 12 rebounds to go with nine points for Houston (8-0), which was playing its first true road game of the season.
Quincy Olivari scored 17 points while Desmond Claude added 14 for the Musketeers (4-4). The game was slowed in the second half by 33 personal fouls and a technical on Houston coach Kelvin Sampson. In all, 50 fouls were called in the contest.
No. 19 BYU 85, Fresno State 56
Jaxson Robinson scored 24 points and Spencer Johnson added 22 as both set career highs in the Cougars’ win over the Bulldogs in Salt Lake City.
Robinson shot 6-for-8 from 3-point range for BYU (7-0), which led by as many as 32 and cruised to the nonconference win.
Isaiah Hill led Fresno State (3-4) with 14 points, while Jalen Weaver scored 10 points. The Bulldogs committed 21 turnovers.
