Former Iowa starting quarterback Spencer Petras has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports Monday.

Petras isn’t playing this season after undergoing major surgery on his right (passing) shoulder last December. He has one season of eligibility remaining.

Petras is serving as a temporary employee on the Hawkeyes football staff this season to save his final season of eligibility.

Petras has passed for 5,199 yards, 24 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his Iowa career. He attempted 245 or more passes in three straight seasons (2020-22).

In 2022, Petras completed 55.9 percent of his attempts for 1,725 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.

Michigan transfer Cade McNamara was Iowa’s starting quarterback this season until he tore the ACL in his left knee during a 26-16 victory over Michigan State on Sept. 30. McNamara says he will return to Iowa for the 2024 campaign.

Deacon Hill took over as the Hawkeyes’ starting quarterback and has passed for 715 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.
