The San Francisco Giants on Sunday placed shortstop Brandon Crawford on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left forearm, with the move retroactive to Saturday.

The Giants recalled one of their top prospects, rookie outfielder Luis Matos, from Triple-A Sacramento. He started in left field and batted seventh in the Giants’ game Sunday at the Atlanta Braves. Johan Camargo started at shortstop.

Crawford is a three-time All-Star who is batting a career-low .194 in 242 at-bats over 77 games. He has six home runs and 32 RBIs.

Crawford, 36, was hoping to rest the forearm without going on the injured list for the third time this season. He had missed 13 games with a calf strain in May and 12 games with left knee inflammation in July.

“He’s been grinding,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “He’s been grinding mentally, but he’s also been dealing with physical things that have made it more difficult for him to have success. Some forearm tightness really hasn’t enabled him to get on top of the baseball like he wants to, and we know that he’s dealt with some knee soreness over the course of the season.”

Matos, 21, made his MLB debut on June 14 and batted .241 with seven doubles, one homer, nine RBIs, 13 walks and 21 strikeouts in 175 plate appearances over 50 games before he was optioned to Sacramento on Aug. 14.

In 58 combined games this season at the Triple-A and Double-A levels, Matos is hitting .336 with a .402 on-base percentage, a .536 slugging percentage, 13 doubles, 10 home runs and 36 RBIs in 235 at-bats.
