Kerry Carpenter had three hits, including a home run, to help the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 win against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon and give them three wins in the four-game series in Minneapolis.
Spencer Torkelson had a two-run homer, Andy Ibanez contributed three hits and an RBI and Javier Baez had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who won with a combination of relievers for the second time in the series.
Brendan White (1-0) earned the win and Jason Foley recorded his third save.
Carlos Correa had two hits for Minnesota.
Twins starter Louie Varland (3-3) surrendered six runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Varland and fellow Minnesota starters Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray are a combined 0-5 in 12 starts in June with a 5.74 ERA.
Baez tripled for the second time in the series to drive in Carpenter for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Detroit started Will Vest for the second time in the series and he got the first two outs before giving up two singles. He gave way to Tyler Holton, who escaped the inning, but Holton gave up doubles to Kyle Farmer and Christian Vazquez in the second to tie the score at 1-1.
Torkelson blasted a two-run homer to deep left-center field in the fifth inning for a 3-1 lead. Carpenter followed with his home run to make it 4-1.
Ibanez later had an RBI single in the inning for a 5-1 lead.
Miguel Cabrera followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the fifth run of the inning and make it 6-1.
Alex Lange started the eighth for Detroit and hit Michael A. Taylor in the neck with a pitch before walking Edouard Julien. Willi Castro then doubled to right field to make it 6-2.
After another hit by pitch, another run scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. A walk to Correa loaded the bases and ended Lange’s day.
Foley came on and gave up a single to Royce Lewis to make it 6-4 and keep the bases loaded, but he got Farmer to fly out to shallow left and struck out Joey Gallo and Byron Buxton to end the inning. Foley then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
