MLS: Galaxy aim to get back on track vs. Real Salt Lake

The Los Angeles Galaxy will try to end their ongoing losing and scoreless streaks when they visit Real Salt Lake on Wednesday in Sandy, Utah.

Los Angeles (2-9-3, 9 points) has the fewest points of any team in MLS, and its 10 goals scored are tied for the lowest total in the league. The goals drought has stretched over three consecutive shutout losses, including Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat against Charlotte FC.

The Galaxy’s league-best 222 shots only add to the frustration, as the club hasn’t been able to translate that pressure into goals. LA coach Greg Vanney said his team is being too “hyper-aggressive” in trying to create chances, rather than focusing on quality opportunities.

“There’s an honest overplaying in the moment where we are rushing into attacks. … Too much individually we’re trying to make the play that’s going to change the game or change the season,” Vanney said.

The absence of star striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez will create a further attacking challenge for the Galaxy. Hernandez will miss Wednesday’s game after being issued a red card against Charlotte.

Real Salt Lake (4-6-4, 16 points) have a modest 14 goals scored this season but have become better at grinding out results. After a 2-5-0 start to the season, Salt Lake is 2-1-4 in its last seven matches and is riding a three-game (1-0-2) unbeaten streak.

“We’re trending in the right direction,” RSL general manager Elliot Fall told KSL Sports earlier this week. “There’s a way to go still. … Of course, we would love to put the ball in the back of the net and turn some of those (draws) into three points.”

RSL had a chance at victory in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Minnesota United, but defender Justen Glad scored an own goal for the accidental equalizer. Glad and Braian Ojeda both won’t play Wednesday due to caution accumulation.

Salt Lake goalkeeper Zac MacMath was removed at halftime against Minnesota due to concussion protocol. Gavin Beavers entered the game as a substitute and will start Wednesday if MacMath is unable to return.
