Amanda Anisimova announced that she is taking an indefinite break from tennis, citing concerns for her mental health and burnout.

“I’ve really been struggling with my mental health and burnout since the summer of 2022,” Anisimova, 21, wrote Friday on Instagram. “It’s become unbearable being at tennis tournaments. At this point, my priority is my mental well-being and taking a break for some time. I’ve worked as hard as I could to push through it. I will miss being out there, and I appreciate all the continuous support.”

A two-time WTA singles champion, Anisimova upset reigning champion Simona Halep en route to reaching the semifinals of the 2019 French Open semifinals. The then-17-year-old was the youngest woman to reach that stage at a major since 2006.

Anisimova upset Coco Gauff on her path toward the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2022. She also bested defending champion Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open in 2022.

Currently ranked 46th in the world, Anisimova has won just three of 11 matches this season. She previously was ranked as high as 21st in the world.
