Bryce Hopkins logged 29 points and 23 rebounds as host Providence outlasted Big East foe Marquette 103-98 in double overtime on Tuesday night.

Despite going just 1 of 5 from the field in the ultimate frame, the Friars (10-3, 2-0 Big East) were 11 of 14 from the foul line. Six of those free throws came from Hopkins, who achieved his fifth double-double of the season and also had three steals.

Providence’s lone field goal of double overtime was an Alyn Breed 3-pointer with 2:04 left.

Devin Carter and Ed Croswell each scored 20 points, Jared Bynum added 16 on three triples and Breed had 13 for the Friars. Carter added a team-high four assists and three steals.

Tyler Kolek led Marquette (9-4, 1-1) with 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting and added five steals, five rebounds and three assists in his home state of Rhode Island. Kam Jones supplied 24 points.

A Hopkins steal and layup with 2:18 left capped Providence’s 10-2 run to open overtime. After a Marquette timeout, Kolek scored seven consecutive points to bring the Golden Eagles back within one.

Hopkins hit one of two free throws before Kolek’s fadeaway jumper in the lane tied the score at 89 with 5.8 seconds left.

Kolek and Olivier-Maxence Prosper fouled out early in the second overtime, but Jones hit the first two field goals to lift Marquette. The hosts ultimately took over at the line.

Marquette controlled most of the second half, but it went 6:49 without a field goal until the final minute of regulation.

After a 10-0 Friar run, David Joplin (18 points) hit a circus layup with 39 seconds left, forcing overtime with things tied 78-78.

Providence had 10-0 and 8-0 runs in the first half. It was 34-23 after Bynum’s coast-to-coast play.

The Golden Eagles had the final first-half push, tying the game at 36 after Kolek scored four straight and Jones hit a tough layup with 3:07 left. A 10-0 Marquette run turned into 12-3 as a Croswell layup helped Providence to a 39-38 halftime edge.

Marquette started the second half on its front foot, as Prosper converted a three-point play to give the Golden Eagles a 41-39 lead.

Back-to-back Bynum buckets allowed Providence to tie things at 54-54. Kolek hit three free throws and Oso Ighodaro flushed a follow-up dunk to build a five-point advantage for Marquette with 13:40 left.

After four Friar free throws, Jones hit a high-arching trey during an individual 5-0 run to lift the visitors to 75-66 edge at the 7:21 mark.
