NCAAB: Memphis secures commanding home win over Ole Miss

DeAndre Williams had 17 points and 14 rebounds to power Memphis to a 68-57 victory over visiting Ole Miss on Saturday.

Williams went 7 of 16 from the field and added seven assists and three blocks, while Alex Lomax added 14 points as the Tigers (6-2) won their fourth straight game. Kendric Davis finished with 14 points and Chandler Lawson chipped in nine points and six rebounds for Memphis, which led by no fewer than eight points for the final 44:26.

The Tigers shot 27 of 69 (39.1 percent) from the field, including 1 of 15 (6.7 percent) from 3-point range, in addition to outrebounding the Rebels 42-39. Memphis made 13 of its 16 attempts from the free-throw line.

Ole Miss (6-2), which has lost two straight, was led by Matthew Murrell, who had 13 points and three rebounds, while Myles Burns added 10 points and five rebounds. Theo Akwuba finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

The Rebels shot 21 of 63 (33.3 percent) from the field, including 5 of 20 (25 percent) from beyond the arc, in addition to getting outscored 46-30 in the paint.

After Ole Miss trimmed a 36-22 halftime deficit to 38-28 on Burns’ layup with 16:55 left, the Tigers countered with a 7-0 run to take a 45-28 lead on Williams’ three-point play with 15:09 to go.

The Tigers dominated from the opening tip, jumping out to a 17-5 lead on Williams’ layup with 13:44 left in the first half. Memphis stretched its lead to as many as 22 after Lawson’s three-point play made it 30-8 with 7:41 remaining before halftime.

Lomax scored 10 points and Williams had six in the first 20 minutes for Memphis, which shot 16 of 34 (47.1 percent) from the field, including 1 of 9 (11.1 percent) from beyond the arc.

Ole Miss was led by Murrell and James White, who scored five points apiece.

The Rebels shot 8 of 33 (24.2 percent) from the field in the first half, including 2 for 11 (18.2 percent) from distance.
